Wembley Journey Ends..............

All good things must come to an end as they saying goes. And after already disposing of two Step Six sides in this year’s FA Vase, Swans couldn’t quite make it third time lucky against Bodmin, but they couldn’t have come any closer if they tried.

The final 2-1 score line flattered Bodmin such was Swans’ second half dominance, although the home side, with some justification too, could have argued that they could and perhaps should have put the game to be before the break.

In the end, all Bodmin had to show from their first half endeavours was a single strike from centre-half Chris McPhee who stabbed home after his initial shot had deflected off Sam Beale’s back.

James Langdon tipped Steve Colwell’s long range effort onto the post and Mark Carter had a goal rightly chalked off for offside, but Swans repelled most of what Bodmin threw at them with Swans’ centre back pairing of Beale and Dan Godwin outstanding throughout.

Swans weren’t without their chances either in the opening period as Paul Best caught goal scorer McPhee and his ‘keeper Ryan Draper napping and the visiting skippers’ fizzing drive was expertly tipped over as Draper atoned for his indiscretion.

After the break, and playing down the Priory Park slope, Swans were on the front foot from the off and presentable chances came and went twice for Aaron Atkinson when clear through on goal and Perry Mullins who stung Draper’s palms from the edge of the box.

Swans’ dominance was rewarded however when Paul Best’s deflected effort sailed past Draper after neat build-up play involving his brother Dave and Jacob Harrop.

Cruelly for Swans, this sparked Bodmin back into life and after Carter struck a post with Langdon rooted to the spot, ex St-Austell midfielder Ollie Brokenshire scored from close range.

Despite falling behind for a second time, Swans kept plugging away with Paul Best and Mullins going close in the dying embers, but the equalising goal, which was the least Swanage deserved didn’t arrive and Bodmin held on to book their place in Round Two where they will face Plymouth Parkway.

After the match, Swans received a standing ovation from their small but vocal travelling support which had made the long trip from Dorset whilst Bodmin were given a crude dressing down by their manager Steve Gilbert in full view of the exiting supporters.

Whether this could have been viewed as a compliment or being disrespectful towards Swans’ performance is debatable as a case could be made for either, but whatever it’s merits, Bodmin were given a stern examination by Tim Brown’s side which can only bode well for the remainder of the DPL campaign.

Swans: Langdon, Biles (T Beard 87), Harrop, A Scott (Robinson 61), Godwin, D Best, P Best, Beale, Mullins, Rose, Atkinson. Sub not used: Ritchie.

Swans star man: Tough to pick a star man as the team, to a man, were outstanding.
